Adrenal Fatigue Supplements and Herbs May Help Recharge Your System

by Keith Bishop

Adrenal fatigue symptoms include fatigue, exhaustion and poor sleep while feeling overwhelmed. Targeted supplements can recharge the adrenals so that they can make energy substances and help people deal with stress.

Many healthcare practitioners can provide laboratory tests to measure adrenal compounds. The following supplements help the body make adrenal energy substances, including cortisol, epinephrine and norepinephrine.

Food Vitamins for the Adrenals

Vitamin B5 is a precursor to the synthesis of CoA (Coenzyme A), an essential cofactor for energy production in the cells and required for the production of cortisol.

Vitamin B6 helps the cells in the body accept cortisol, and it facilitates the production of brain elements serotonin and dopamine, and energy substances epinephrine and norepinephrine.
Vitamin C is essential for the synthesis of epinephrine secreted by the adrenal glands in response to stress.

Adaptogenic Herbs for the Adrenals

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is a traditional ayurvedic (Indian) herb used as a general tonic to support energy, and mental and physical performance. Ashwagandha helps address and adapt to all stages of short- and long-term stress and helps the body avoid the damaging consequences from stressors. Look for supplements with extracts of withanolides to ensure a quality product.

Cordyceps sinensis (cordyceps) is a type of fungus that has been used for centuries in Chinese medicine and now Western integrative medicine. Cordyceps are used to support energy and strength, enhance stamina, and support healthy body weight through blood sugar and fat metabolism. Look for supplements with an extract of cordycepic acids to ensure a quality product.

Panax ginseng (ginseng) has been used for thousands of years in Traditional Chinese Medicine for energy production and recovery from injuries. Experimental studies show supplementing ginseng supports healthy weight, heart function, hormones, memory, antidepressant brain elements, and healthy levels of adrenal energy substances epinephrine, norepinephrine and cortisol. Look for supplements with extracts of ginsenosides to ensure a quality product.

Rhodiola rosea (rhodiola) has been used to support stamina, mood, immune system and sexual function. Rhodiola may have a positive effect on the antidepressant brain elements serotonin and dopamine. A review of medical research shows rhodiola supplementation supports improved work performance, energy levels due to physical or mental stress, quality of sleep and appetite. Look for supplements with extracts of rosavins and salidrosides to ensure a quality product.

In most cases, it’s possible to maximize the benefit of supplements by taking vitamins with food and herbs on an empty stomach. Feeding the body with adrenal vitamins and adaptogen herbs may help adrenals recover and adapt to stresses in life.
