Buddha Mind Monastery, Chung Tai Zen Center, in Oklahoma City, is offering two weekly Beginning Zen Meditation and Buddhism classes starting this month. Participants can choose evening classes from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursdays, beginning May 11, or morning classes from 10 a.m. to noon Fridays, beginning May 12. No experience is required and the classes are free.
Taught by Shifu Jian-Ren, the abbess of Buddha Mind Monastery, these classes will introduce Zen Buddhism and fundamental teachings of the Buddha, as well as different methods of meditation. Students will learn Buddhist teachings about truth and the origin of suffering, helping them to deal more effectively with difficulties that have arisen and to prepare for those yet to happen.
The class focuses on having a positive outlook and gaining peace of mind amidst the difficulties of life. Lessons include Introduction to Zen Buddhism, Karma and Causality, and The Four Noble Truths (suffering, the cause of suffering, cessation of suffering, and nirvana). Students will participate in Zen sitting and walking meditation, as well as chanting.
