The Birth of a Birthing Center

by Meghan Nguyen

The Edmond Birthing Center LLC is the newest addition to the Oklahoma birth community. As Edmond’s first and only freestanding birthing center, the facility opened this month to serve a need in the community. The goal is to act as a beacon of respect and education and to offer birthing choices to Central Oklahoma families. The staff believes that birth is a natural occurrence and not a medical emergency.

The idea for The Edmond Birthing Center was born in the fall of 2014 at a baby expo in Oklahoma City. Area moms spoke with several birth professionals and discovered there was a general consensus that the Edmond area lacked birthing options. Organizers collaborated for months and wrote an extensive business plan, hired a nonprofit attorney, and put together a board of directors. However, after a year of applying for grants and not receiving any, the board of directors made the decision to dissolve the nonprofit and The Edmond Birthing Center became a limited liability company.

A birthing center is free from any hospital affiliation, which means its certified nurse midwives and certified professional midwives can practice evidence-based maternity care without unnecessary medical intervention or regulations set forth by insurance companies. Expectant moms can eat, move and work with their bodies during labor, and even birth in their oversized water birth tubs. Birthing center practitioners truly believe in respecting families during this time of celebration. A birthing center can serve as a better, safer option for low-risk pregnancy and births when the mother wants a natural childbirth experience with a midwife.

The Edmond Birthing Center doesn’t just offer pregnancy and birth services, but also well-woman yearly exams and family-planning services. The center features a 1,000-square-foot classroom with a free lending library and a whole calendar full of events, support groups and educational classes.

The Edmond Birthing Center will hold a Grand Opening event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., June 10. Attendees can meet local birth-related vendors, snag a swag bag, enter to win some amazing door prizes and tour the center.
