Happy Yards Equals Happy People: Landscaper Strives for Customer Satisfaction

by Sheila Julson

Lorenzo Silva has always believed that one should never give up in life, but rather when the going gets tough, it’s important to “stop worrying, get up and hustle,” and not be deterred by a challenge. That can-do attitude has led this one-time foreman with the Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation to strike out on his own to form his own landscaping business, Mr. Clean Gardening Service.

Silva has operated Mr. Clean Gardening Service (also known as Mr. Clean Lawn Care) since 1975. When he relocated to Oklahoma City in 2011, he didn’t miss a beat in his new hometown and reformed his business while tweaking it to suit the growing conditions and climate of Oklahoma City.

Mr. Clean Gardening Service specializes in lawn care, including mowing, trimming, new lawn and sod installation, and seed planting; traditional and natural weed and pest control; sprinkler system repair; “brush hogging” or rotary mowing, a method often used for cutting thick brush and vegetation over large areas; flowerbed installation and design; shrub planting and trimming; composting; and landscapes and hardscapes.

“We also cultivate ground with a rototiller to prepare the soil for gardens. Some people like to plant their own gardens, so we have a machine to churn and break the soil and get the ground ready for planting,” Silva says, adding that it’s a service that can be beneficial for people that enjoy planting and tending gardens, but bristle at the thought of having to initially weed, clear and prep a garden area themselves.

Having worked in lawn care and landscaping since his teens, Silva believes that with his experience also comes confidence, which allows him to set aside any apprehensions about tackling a project. “There’s always a way to accomplish something,” Silva says. “No matter what it is, don’t be afraid—just take your time and do it.”

Silva serves both commercial and residential markets, and he gets much of his business through word of mouth. He’s had many clients that hire him every season. Mr. Clean Gardening Service also has established business relationships with other landscapers and lawn care companies so they can help one another with certain services and share equipment.

In addition to spending time outdoors, which Silva says keeps him fit both mentally and physically, he and his employee, Kevin Henderson, truly savor taking pride in a job well done. “I’m proud of what I do, and I enjoy it,” says Silva. “I like to see good results and happy people. When they say ‘my lawn looks beautiful,’ or ‘my hedges look nice,’ that really inspires me to continue doing my work.”
