Natural Care First: Side Benefits vs. Side Effects!

Traveling to over 60 countries with over 100 medical missions and many teaching tours on 6 continents for over 30 years, Bryan L Frank MD, an Edmond integrative physician, uses natural remedies to be healthy and well while on travel and while at home. Dr. Frank’s teams have used natural therapies to treat malaria, typhoid, food poisoning, dysentery, cholera and other diseases without the use of conventional pharmaceuticals. For many conditions, natural remedies work as well or better than pharmaceuticals have side benefits rather than side effects. For years, Dr. Frank and his teams have used natural therapies in lieu of immunizations and drug-based therapies.

Interestingly, the World Health Organization (WHO) Resolution 44:34 promotes the use of “traditional, harmless, efficient and scientifically proven remedies.

Dr. Frank’s arsenal of natural remedies includes a new pH structured silver sol (far more advanced than colloidal silver), activated charcoal, botanical/herbal, homeopathic and essential oil remedies. While this may seem like a lot to learn, his book, Travel Well, Naturally: An Essential Guide to Staying Healthy on Personal, Business or Mission Travel, is available at www.TravelDoc.info. The book is a thorough yet compact reference and easy to take along on travel for reference. Beyond the therapies mentioned here, he also discusses simple acupuncture and Auricular Therapy treatments for the travel health and injury or pain therapy.

Travel inherently includes often being in crowded planes, airports and other places with many persons who may be overtly sick, or those silently carrying diseases and unknowingly exposing others to illness. A few simple preventive measures can dramatically decrease the likelihood of illness:

  • Get healthy or stay healthy prior to travel. “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”
  • Consume a diet of whole, organic, live foods. Be cautious with raw foods or even cooked foods that are not still hot.
  • Stay well hydrated with clean water and well rested before and during travel.
  • Take probiotics and immune supporting remedies daily for one week prior to and continuing for one week after travel.

Travel essentials on Dr. Frank’s list include:

Activated charcoal: Offers powerful properties to adsorb toxins and microbial infections, whether food-borne or topical. Orally, take 4 capsules at the first signs of diarrhea, food poisoning or general indigestion. Open capsules and make a paste for bites, stings, boils and plant contact poisoning.

pH Structured Silver Sol: This is important as a preventative but also with antibacterial, antiviral, anti-parasitic properties for many acute illnesses. Silver Sol often clears upper respiratory infections quickly as well as many other infectious diseases. Generally, 1-2 tablespoons 2-4 times daily will work for most infections. Research has shown silver solutions effective to kill over 650 microbes. If using the newer silver sols, this is very safe for young and old alike. Used orally, topically and in the eyes, ears and nose.

Homeopathic first-aid kit: Consider Arnica Montana, Calendula, Belladona, Apis mellifica and Nat sulph, to name a few. These are gentle, safe and often the best choice for many ailments or injuries and typically available at many natural grocers and health food stores.

Botanical remedies: Great to carry St. John’s Wort for travel fatigue, Valerian Root for sleep and Echinacea for cold and flu.

Pure essential oils: lavender for fatigue and motion sickness, peppermint for headaches, and tea tree oil and/or Thieves Blend as a general antiseptic or antibacterial.

Dr. Frank’s essential travel hacks:

  • Always take structured silver in a 1-3 ounce nasal spray bottle and use 2-3 sprays in each nostril every few hours while on flights or in crowds.
  • Always take activated charcoal in case of travel diarrhea or ingestion of toxins.
  • Always take essential oils, especially Thieves Blend. Spray on hands, mouth and face when on flights or in crowds.
  • Always take homeopathic Oscillococcinum for cough, colds or flu.
