Sustain Salon, in Oklahoma City, provides high-end hair artistry and skin care with an Earth-conscious approach. Owner Mazey Denman came up with the concept for the salon after working in the beauty industry for more than 12 years and witnessing how much waste one salon can create daily.
“We use the services of Green Circle Salons to recycle 95 percent of our waste that cannot be recycled on my weekly trips to the local drop-off,” explains Denman. “This includes human hair, chemical waste, foil, gloves, waxing supplies and more.”
The use of refillable containers, bulk eco-friendly cleaning solutions, and locally made washable cloths contribute to Sustain Salon’s mission. Ecoheads, which are installed on the salon’s shampoo basins, save 65 percent more water than traditional faucets. CLEAN, another green company, is used for towel washing services to save energy.
The salon’s paper materials are all previously recycled and recyclable. Their forest-free toilet paper is sourced from Who Gives a Crap, a company that builds toilets for people in need. ECOBRICKS, a company that keeps plastic waste out of the biosphere, is utilized to recycle excess plastic. The bricks are used to build items like furniture, insulation and park benches.
“Through the process of creating Sustain Salon, I’ve gained tons of knowledge, and I find myself thinking about the lifespan of an object before purchasing,” says Denman. “In addition to providing Earth-conscious beauty services, my staff and I strive to educate everyone we encounter. Sustain Salon is just one step towards changing the beauty industry for the better. It’s my hope that other salons will adopt Earth-conscious practices because the future depends on it.”
